Carrier Ethernet Traffic Management
Mehmet Toy · 2012
Data plane for Carrier Ethernet consists of Media Access Control; data parsing, which is parsing frame/packet headers for address or protocol information; classification, which is identifying frame against a criteria of a filtering/forwarding decision, quality of service (QoS), or accounting, etc.; data encapsulation, which is transformation of packet data between protocols; and traffic management, which is queuing, scheduling, and policing frames. This chapter describes the key components of Metro Ethernet traffic engineering including classes of service (CoS) and associated service-level agreements (SLA). SLAs between a service provider and subscriber for a given EVC are defined in terms of delay, jitter, loss, and availability performances. The chapter summarizes the application prioritization and related performance parameters for the ITU, IETF, and 3GPP/3GPP2 standard bodies. It also summarizes the guidelines to support applications requiring multi-CoS. Controlled Vocabulary Terms ethernet networks; quality of service
