An Assessment of the Evolution of Research and Systems
Frédéric Landragin · 2013
Man–machine dialogue (MMD) system appears more present in the works of science-fiction than in reality. This chapter highlights that when the dialogue is directed by a clearly defined task, it is possible to design a performing MMD and this design has actually greatly progressed in the past few years. The first section of the chapter discusses a few historical landmarks, and also deals with first written systems, and first oral and multimodal systems. The second section discusses the functionalities that are more and more present on current systems. It presents three characteristics of a cognitive system. These characteristics include input processing, the system's internal analyses and output management. The approaches based on the expressive power of a well-defined logic, and its consistency with natural language, have explored different types of logics. The final section provides a primary list of potential challenges for the years to come. Controlled Vocabulary Terms man-machine systems; natural languages
