Evolving neural networks: Is it really worth the effort?

Abstract. The idea of using simulated evolution to create neural networks that learn faster and generalize better is becoming increasingly widespread. However, such evolutionary processes are usually extremely computationally intensive. In this paper, I present an empirical study to investigate whether the improved performance obtained really does justify the extra effort, and whether it might be possible to extract some general principles from existing evolved networks that can be applied directly to our hand-crafted networks. 1.
