Integration of Opportunistic Routing and Network Coding

Kai Zeng, Wenjing Lou, Ming Li · 2011

This chapter investigates the transmission coordination problem in opportunistic routing and shows how the strict coordination requirement in Extremely Opportunistic Routing (ExOR) can be greatly eased using network coding. It describesMORE,a well-known state-of-the-art Medium Assess Control (MAC)-independent opportunistic routing protocol. After identifying the inadequacy of MORE in dealing with multicast and broadcast, the author demonstrates how network coding can be integrated with opportunistic listening in wireless broadcast. In particular, the author shows a class of challenging problem mobile content distribution (MCD) in Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET), where large files are broadcast proactively from a few Access Point (AP)s to vehicles inside an interested area. Using two typical MCD applications as examples popular content distribution and live multimedia streaming, the chapter presents two novel push-based broadcast schemes namely CodeOn and CodePlay. Controlled Vocabulary Terms media access protocol; network coding; network routing; vehicular ad hoc networks
