The new automobile technology that incorporates electronics has been very successful in the development of the exhaust emission control system. In fact, this new control system can satisfy the simultaneous requirements of exhaust emission control and improvement of fuel economy, which had previously been thought impossible owing to their conflicting properties. There is no doubt that the utilization of electronic technology has been the key to the development of automobile control systems. Among a number of electronic components, the sensor capability is a decisive factor as to whether a system is practical or not. Therefore, much attention has been directed to the improvement of sensor durability and reliability. Now, the mutual understanding between both electronics and automobile fields has been promoted and their collaboration has been strengthened. It is evident that sensor technology plays a very important role wherever electronics and automobile technologies are connected.
