This chapter provides a discussion on the emergence of networked appliances, the factors driving this emergence, and what issues exist. We shall consider why NAs are emerging now, identify three example deployment environments for NAs and note the differences both in the character of those environments and their use of NA technology. We shall then go on to look at two of the main challenges facing long term NA adoption – one with a proposed solution, and one to which the resolution is still uncertain.
