The experiment aims to study and utilize entanglement between strongly confined and laser-cooled /sup 40/Ca/sup +/-ions for creating quantum gates, which can serve as basic elements of a quantum computer. In this work towards realizing this goal, detection of the ions internal state is an important issue. The two magnetic sublevels of the /sup 2/S/sub 1/2/, ground state of /sup 40/Ca+-ions trapped in a linear Paul trap as our quantum bit (qubit) states.
