In this paper we discuss the design and implementation of Caching at Network Layer for Multicasting in active networks. Active Networks are programmable networks that allow servers and client to reject customized programs into the nodes of the networks. This facility throws open tremendous opportunities to make our current day networks more dynamic by ease of creating and deploying protocols, impact on network services and impact on network performance. We intend to come up with a generic framework taking a holistic approach devoid of applications to add capabilities to the network layer taking advantage of the active nodes and this paper is the first step towards that. We used ANTS 2.0 (MIT Labs) API to implement the caching facility at the network layer for multicasting and addressed various challenges in multicasting such as managing bandwidth utilization of bottleneck links, not overloading the sender with retransmission requests and keeping the latency of retransmission low.
