Statistical 'Maps' of the Party Vote: 2002 New Zealand Election

Computer-generated ‘maps’ of the New Zealand political parties and electorates are constructed using multidimensional scaling. Possible interpretations of these maps are discussed. In particular, it is proposed that one type of plot, dubbed a Compass Plot, may simulate a ‘mind map’ of how parties compare to one another.
