Testing Effort Control Through Software Reliability Growth Modelling

P. K. Kapur, Amit Kumar Bardhan · International Journal of Modelling and Simulation · 2002

A Software Reliability Growth Model (SRGM) explores the relationship between the number of faults removed with respect to time and/or testing effort. During the testing phase of a software development cycle, faults are removed in two phases: first a failure occurs, and then the fault causing that failure is corrected. Therefore, testing effort is spent on two separate processes; failure identification and fault removal. In this article, we develop a SRGM incorporating time lag not only between the two phases but also through the segregation of resources between them. Using this SRGM, two alternate methods are proposed for controlling the testing effort for achieving desired reliability or error detection level. The model is validated on actual software test data sets, and results are illustrated through numerical examples.
