Acoustic and Perceptual Study of Hindi Vowels in Consonantal Context
I Khan, S H S Rizvi · IETE Journal of Research · 1994
Effect of consonant environments on Hindi vowels in non-meaningful syllables have been studied. The measurement of fundamental and formant frequencies were carefully carried from syllable spectrograms obtained using Kay's Sona-Graph 7029-A. The calibration of equipment, measurement techniques and details of acoustic study are described. The study involves 21 speakers and 15 listeners in /hVd/ context, one distinct speaker each for the spectrographic pilot studies for the two sets of CVC and VCV syllables. The results of spectrographic analyses and perception tests carried out for the /hVd/ tokens indicate that there is little systematic acoustic variation in these three contexts due to the different consonantal environments.
