Assessing the useability of technical manuals: a successful case history

Judd Robbins, Lockrem Johnson · OSTI OAI (U.S. Department of Energy Office of Scientific and Technical Information) · 1979

The Software Documentation Group of the Computer Science and Services Division of Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) conducted a computer documentation user study in 1978. The study was designed to assess the useability of LASL computer documentation. This paper describes the study, reviews the results, and discusses the study's implications for document development. The study itself provides a valuable model that is readily adaptable by anyone interested in assessing document useability. It was done in a short time, at reasonable cost, with substantial payoff in information and improved technical communication.
