Explanations in Context-Aware Systems.

Intelligibility is the ability of an application to explain its own behaviors. In context-aware applications where an application is often reacting to implicit user input, intelligibility is extremely important for maintaining user satisfaction and usability. In this paper, we describe the Situations abstraction, a toolkit component that supports the building of rules-based context-aware applications that can expose some information about their behavior with little extra work on the part of application builder. We also present two sample applications that have been built with this abstraction and demonstrate how the abstraction can support intelligibility and explanations.
