Signal processing algorithms needed for the accurate display of shape from 3D and 4D volumetric data, obtained with for instance with a CT or MRI scanner, di#er in a fundamental way from traditional signal processing algorithms in telecom applications. The large volume of the data and the need for interactive display of shape from such data makes it necessary to find fast algorithms. Algorithms that produce accurate images are needed to support the medical applications considered. The paper starts with a short description of the operation of CT and MRI scanners. The 3D point-spread functions and the corresponding modulation transfer functions of such scanners are presented. The main topic of the paper is the description of the accuracy that can be obtained in the combined signal processing & graphics algorithms. It will be shown that the usual frequency domain criteria, known from the signal-processing domain should be complemented with new, more important criteria that support the rec...
