An analytic formulation is derived for Kilpatrick's criterion which determines the electric field on an electrode surface above which the interelectrode gap loses electric strength and which is valid for any interelectrode-gap electric field frequency. Laboratory practice has shown that the actual electric strength of interelectrode gaps, even with considerable energy margin over the entire space of the electric fields, substantially exceeds the values given by Kilpatrick's criterion.
