Tiles are the entry point to a Windows Phone application. Windows Phone 8 provides 3 tile templates that you can use to add flair to their application. Each tile template must define the appearance of a tile for each of the 3 available sizes (small, medium, large), which will be visible when a Windows Phone 8 app is pinned to a user’s start screen. You will need to take care to ensure that your live tile represents your application appropriately, while still following the Windows Phone design guidelines, and in a way that captures the user’s attention. This chapter will guide you through the basics of adding live tiles to your application for each template. We close off the chapter by stepping through how to enable lock screen customization from within the app, as well as how to handle integration between the lock screen settings page and the application.
