In the coking operation, incandescent hot coke is pushed from a coke oven into a quench car where a quench system is designed to provide a predetermined amount of water to completely quench the coke. However, because of variations in temperature, a fine tuning is required to bias the actual water flow so that the desired quench can be obtained. This paper describes the installation of a microprocessor to control the quench. The paper is divided into two parts, the first explaining actions required to reach the fine tuning stage and the second explaining the development, description, use and future plans for the microprocessor.
