Abstract We investigated the case of web catalogue deployment failure within Indonesian SMEs as part of our doctoral studies. We explore two theoretical foundations on the term failure, namely Lyytinen and Hirschheim's concept of expectation failure and Sauer's concept of termination failure. We applied them to our case. We analyzed three participants who failed in their web catalogue deployment and tried to find explanations the cause of their failure. 1. Introduction Indonesian SMEs have been trying to utilise Internet as one of supporting tools for their business. In the beginning they used application such as web browser and email client. Recently, they also tried to utilise web catalogue as tool for promoting their business. This paper presents the result of study on the failure of few Indonesian SMEs in deploying their web catalogue. This paper is part of a doctoral study in the area of adoption of innovation. While analysing the adoption process, we found the failure faced by some of our respondents. We decided to continue analysis on the failure. We observed that study of Information Systems (IS) failure within SMEs is less extensive compared to the larger enterprise, let alone for Indonesian SMEs. Our literature study came up with two slightly different definition of failure. We applied both definition and found that one is better than the other in to explain the failure in our study. We continued the analysis by examining factors that might contribute to the failure of our respondents. This paper will be started by defining two concepts of failure, namely expectation failure from Lyytinen and Hirscheim [15, 16] and the definition of termination failure from Sauer [23]. We continue by presenting our research approach. Our findings will be discussed after the research approach. At the end of this paper, we presented our conclusion along with future works arise from our study.
