Nowadays server consolidation is a common practice, especially by means of virtualization. Typically the machine hosting the virtual network is not fully utilized; therefore it is interesting to use free computational resources to implement security solutions and to evaluate their costs. This paper shows and experimentally proves a basic model to foresee the resulting loss of performance, raised by the introduction of one or more firewalls and of the required additional virtual links when using Xen hypervisor for consolidation. Experiments prove the mathematical model presented but leave room for further analysis and enhancements of the model.
