This Circular is the result of the efforts of numerous individuals who have contributed to the research, development, and preparation of various digital cartographic and geographic standards for the National Mapping Division of the u.s.Geological survey.The individuals named as chapter authors represent both the originators of the various concepts as well as the writers who expanded and clarified these ideas.Their contributions, either to the concepts or the writing, are of such magnitude as to warrant crediting as authors.Atef A. Elassal was largely responsible for the original data structures and computer file formats that are used for the digital line graphs and digital elevation models.The attribute coding scheme was first developed by members of the Digital Applications Team under the direction of Robert B.
