Program structure and dynamic models of software reliability: investigation in a simulation environment

J. Keables · 1992

There has long been a separation of static and dynamic models of software reliability. This research investigates the relationship between program structure (a static measure) and the Basic Execution Time Model (a dynamic software reliability model). A simulation environment is presented. This simulation environment gives us a laboratory in which to conduct software reliability experiments. Many aspects of program structure and execution may be controlled in the environment. Finally, the results of a simulation experiment linking the fault exposure ratio from the Basic Execution Time model to program structure are presented. Although a relationship between program structure and the fault exposure ratio is shown, the static measures used do not provide a sufficiently accurate predictor to use during a pre-test application of the Basic Execution Time Model.
