A constructive-CBR approach to configuration design

Stephen E. Potter, Mansur J. Darlington, S J Culley, Pravir K. Chawdhry · 2001

Most CBR design tools utilise specific domain knowledge (in the form of actual design cases), followed by generalised knowledge (in the form of case-modification strategies, models or rules) to solve problems. This paper presents an approach to the configuration design of fluid power systems which uses generalised domain knowledge at an earlier stage to identify and retrieve parts of cases which seem relevant in the context of a new problem. This approach relies on certain characteristics of the domain in question, which means that it is unlikely to be universally applicable to design problems. However, the authors believe that the knowledge required is more readily available than much of that used in other systems, and that the technique offers a valuable means of exploiting CBR when the number of available cases is small — as it often is for design problems.
