Abstract — We have developed an open architecture platform for implementing passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags with a mass memory for close proximity environ-ment. Purposes for such mass memory tags are, e.g., multime-dia files embedded in advertisements or logged sensor data on a low-power sensor node. In the proposed architecture, a mo-bile phone acts as the reader that can read or write the memory of these RFID tags. The architecture also enables creation of a new type of wireless internet access suitable for, e.g., internet kiosks. The architecture is designed so that devel-opment path to a full Network on Terminal Architecture (No-TA) is feasible. The wireless reading speed of the mass memory tags, demonstrated to be 112 Mbit/s, is in the range that a 3-minute 640×320-pixel video can be loaded from the tag to the phone in less than 10 s. Our solution supports Nokia’s Explore and Share concept.
