Fully Scalable Wavelet-Based Image Coding for Transmission Over Heterogeneous Networks

Habibollah Danyali · 2002

This paper presents a fully scalable image coding scheme based on the Set Partitioning in Hierarchi-cal Trees (SPIHT) algorithm. The proposed algorithm, called Fully Scalable SPIHT (FS-SPIHT), adds the spa-tial scalability feature to the SPIHT algorithm. It pro-vides this new functionality without sacricing other important features of the original SPIHT bitstream such as: compression efciency, full embeddedness and rate scalability. The exible output bitstream of the FS-SPIHT encoder which consists of a set of embedded parts related to different resolutions and quality can be easily adapted (reordered) to given bandwidth and res-olution requirements by a simple transcoder (parser) without decoding the bitstream. FS-SPIHT is a very good candidate for image communication over het-erogenous networks which requires high degree of scal-ability from image coding systems. Other applications such as progressive web browsing and exible image storage and retrieval would benet from full scalability feature of FS-SPIHT. 1.
