132. Construction of Geiger-Müller Counters with Useful Characteristics

Osamu Minakawa · Proceedings of the Imperial Academy · 1943

Previously'' the following points were stated as to the construction of Geiger-Muller counters containing alcohol vapour.a) Counters made of different cathode materials showed some difference as regards the length of the flat portion of their characteristic curves.b) When oxygen, hydrogen or air was used instead of argon, or when these gases were present appreciably (about 5 % at least) in the counter gas as impurities, the characteristic of a counter was much spoiled.c) From the mechanism of counter discharge, it was mentioned that helium and neon (and probably nitrogen) can be used successfully instead of argon ; and accordingly neon was tried instead of argon and satisfactory results were obtained2'.In the present note the effect of the partial pressures of argon and alcohol upon the characteristics of a counter will be given.
