Algorithms for the best-quality frame selection and registration from retinal videos acquired in prematurely born infants

This work is about the design of an algorithm and the development of a software that selects the frames with the highest quality in RetCam videos and compose a mosaic with them. In the first part of the work, one index of focus and one of interlacing have been developed, each with two different techniques, the performance of which have been compared. In the second part, mosaicing is accomplished by means of registration algorithm that employ a phase correlation technique. In order to provide the best possible quality of the final composition, a custom single-frame weighting procedure has been devised / Questo lavoro riguarda la progettazione di un algoritmo e lo sviluppo di un software che selezioni i frame di miglior qualita da video della retina di neononato acquisiti con la fundus camera RetCam, e che componga un mosaico con questi. Nella prima parte della tesi sono stati sviluppati, con tecniche diverse, un indice del focus ed uno dell’interlacciamento, e ne sono state comparate le loro performance. Nella seconda parte, invece, e stato realizzato un mosaico delle migliori immagini mediante un algoritmo di registrazione basato sulla correlazione di fase. Per fornire alla figura finale la miglior qualita possibile, e stata ideata una procedura di pesatura applicabile ad ogni singolo frame
