The distribution of SCADA intelligence from the control center to the field has solved the communication difficulties of earlier SCADA systems, and made the process of pipe line data acquisition and supervisory control immensely more flexible than it was even five years ago. As oil and gas companies are coming to understand, installing a SCADA system on any pipe line has become an economic necessity. Central to today's SCADA applications is the versatile RTU, the workhorse of the system. Its capabilities have expanded dramatically in the past five years, and there is no end in sight. The ultimate RTU is limited only by the imagination of its engineers.
