Passive video surveillance for security applications
Peter Nicol · The University of Queensland · 1999
This project incorporates a security system, which would require no human input to detect any suspicious movements in a sequence of images (ie. Video Stream). The idea was to integrate a software system in conjunction with the employment of security personnel to monitor video streams from cameras and then respond appropriately to suspicious situations. Using Matlab version 5.3 r in the Microsoft Windows 98 r environment, the project makes use of the Video for windows interface, making it compatible with most framegrabbers and USB cameras. A detailed discussion of the operation of the security system follows. The software makes use of image subtraction to successfully detect a motion and then matches the object to known set images subsequently making a decision on the result of the matching of the images. The software runs at a fast enough rate to be able to display at frame-rate of 3 to 4 frames per second, which is acceptable for the conditions it would be running under. n
