Block digital signal processing (BDSP) systems have been shown to be superior to conventional scalar systems on several counts. It has been conjectured that BDSP systems will provide higher throughputs than the present scalar systems. The authors investigate the validity of this conjecture by addressing the problem of efficient implementation of BDSP systems. A novel architecture that exploits the inherent parallelism in BDSP and can be integrated on VLSI chips is proposed. Such a filter is shown to provide a higher throughput than equivalent filters implemented on commercially available array processors. 7 references.
