Off-the-shelf microprocessor chips are inadequate in many design situations. Microprogramming is reemerging as an alternative to this dilemma. Microprogrammed bit-slice processors, custom VLSI, and other nonstandard forms offer designers the chance to achieve superior system performance, and to implement more functions in less time. Microprogrammed designs can also be more secure while offering more flexible upgrade paths.
