On-the-fly Detection of the First Races in Programs with Nested Parallelism.

Yong-Kee Jun, Charles E. McDowell · 1996

Detecting races is important for debugging shared-memory parallel programs, because the races result in unintended nondeterministic executions of the programs. Previous on-the-fly techniques to detect races in programs with nested parallelism cannot guarantee that the race detected first is not preceded by events that also participate in a race (occurred first in our terminology). This paper presents the first on-the-fly technique to detect efficiently the races that occurred first in programs that have nested parallelism and no other inter-thread coordination. Detecting the races that occurred first is important in debugging, because the removal of such races may make other races disappear (including those detected first by other systems). Therefore, this technique makes on-the-fly race detection more effective and practical in debugging a large class of parallel programs.
