Directions in machine intelligence

Abstract In a recent issue of the Computer Bulletin Ian White (1992) describes AI’s successes as “sporadic”, without, however, making entirely clear to what extent his position is philosophical and to what extent practical I shall comment later on philosophical aspects. First, on the score of practicality, I shall use examples to sketch some emerging patterns in industrially relevant AI. Four cases from a single laboratory are summarised, involving respectively co-developments in oil exploration, aerospace, steel production and pharmaceuticals.
