Metacognition and Open Learner Models

Susan Bull, Judy Kay · 2008

Abstract. This paper considers some of the similarities between the goals of supporting and encouraging metacognition in intelligent tutoring systems and learning in general, and the benefits of opening the learner model to the learner and to the teacher. We identify the purposes for an open learner model and pro-vide examples of two important classes of open learner models: those within a particular teaching system and those that are first-class citizens with value in-dependently of a teaching system. We conclude with a discussion of the links between metacognition and the many purposes of making a learner model open. 1
