Hardening SUSE Linux

Sander van Vugt · Apress eBooks · 2014

Before you start offering real services on your server, it’s a good idea to think about how you can harden your SUSE Linux installation. In this chapter, you’ll learn how to do that. We’ll first have a look at the YaST Security Center and Hardening module, which provides some common options that are easy to apply. Next, you’ll learn how to set up a sudo configuration that allows you to delegate tasks to specific users. Following that, you’ll read about how to configure the Linux Audit Framework to get more detailed events about modifications that have been applied to your server. Then, you’ll read how a pluggable authentication module (PAM) is used to make the authentication procedure modular. Last, you’ll read about SELinux, an advanced way of profiling your system, so that only specific operations are allowed, while everything that is not specifically allowed will be denied. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
