New displacer- piston sensing system promises more accurate meter proving
Ruth Cook, J.R. Strongman · Oil & gas journal/Oil and gas journal · 1983
This article describes a new displacer-piston sensing system developed for use with a pipe-type meter prover. The operation of conventional sensor systems, their systematic and random errors, and the means by which the new system substantially reduces these errors are discussed. Meters used for measurement of the volume of such flowing fluids as crude oil in a pipeline must be calibrated periodically to ensure accuracy. A convenient and accurate device for this purpose is a pipe prover which consists of a pipe containing a displacer (a piston or a sphere). It is used under on-line conditions and operates on the principle that the volume of liquid delivered by the displacer moving a known distance can be accurately determined.
