Neste Oy chose distributed digital instrumentation for the first time in 1979 for the MTBE-unit. Today Neste has six distributed digital systems in operation. These include small and large systems; the largest involving about 300 control loops and 12 video stations in the control room of the phenol plant. Today Neste is able to analyze and to make some conclusions from the experiences it has had in Finland and especially at Neste Oy. Those experiences have been compiled and give an over-all view of what the typical features are and the positive and negative qualities of these systems, as well as how Neste can improve the level of control. Special attention has been paid to the control room technique. The characteristics of the human element are very essential in this connection, and its basic aspects are presented. Finally, some conclusions and suggestions are made, especially concerning the control room technique and disturbance situations.
