An Application of Economic Decision Theory in Software Quality Evaluation

Zheng Qin, Wang Danping · Journal of Communication and Computer · 2009

For a long time, the effectiveness of software testing has been a remarkable problem. The previous research usually focused on the technical aspects of evaluating testing effectiveness. Through comparing the technical criteria and algorithm among different testing methods (such as branch testing and data-flow testing), people verify one specific testing technique is superior to the other. However, some relevant criteria such as cost is not emphasized or even is not taken into account. Based on economic decision theory, a method which helps to comprehensively evaluate software testing effectiveness is proposed in this paper. It assesses testing effectiveness of different testing alternatives based on the software quality evaluation criteria such as time behavior. To validate the method, the paper also describes a tool developed according to the approach and implements it in different organizations.
